It states the following in the Safety Hazards in Child Care Settings. 1. 24% of the child care settings didn t have a safe playground surfacing. 2. 27% do not keep the playground surface well maintained. 3. Playground surfacing at some Child Care settings include dirt, grass, and thin-laid wood chips these will not protect children when they fall. The left is SEICA Mt Pleasant, Ia. To the right is Busy Bees Daycare Tiffin, Ia. Why spend the money on mats instead of wood chips? Mats need very little maintenance. all you have to do is check the seams once in awhile. They also give you better fall protection for any piece of equipment that you may have. If a mat would need to be replaced we can pull out just one mat to fix the problem. Why not put down wood chips, pea gravel, sand ? When using wood chips or pea gravel you need to take into consideration that these tend to be messier and could be a potential hazard to the children. The children will throw/carry it around or into the facility, put into their mouths, or slivers from the woods chips that could be potentially harmful. When using these products there continues to be added costs. What costs? Labor will be needed to keep the wood chips raked , fluffed ,and put back into the area that you want them in. Wood chips decompose which means you will need to add to the existing wood chips and then at some point remove the decomposed materials. It maybe cheaper to use wood chips, pea rock or sand but in the long run MATS are better..
